Here are George Pictures

Nice !!!

First comment.

George, It seems to me that your Jib is to tight, When the Mainsail is completely in, the jib should be open 2-3 cm.

Also, your downhaul is not tight enough or your mast has to much tension backyards, so your mainsail opens to much in the top.

look at this picture, for exemple

But, don´t worry it takes a time to adjust the MM. But then the Lasers on the pond will only see the aft of your Boat  Mat

Hi George,

thanks for further info about your MM-sailing in USA.  Thumbup

metal pole: you mean the alloy mast tube? You can replace it by a simple 6 mm carbon tube you probably easily find in kite stores or model shops as well. 4 mm inside diameter.

Well, about the pics....

There are some points to mention. I start with the one where the inside of the boat is visible without deck shell.
I am in doubt how you have glued your deck on it: Schulter  Schulter  Schulter

The two small wooden reinforcements should have been below the ABS-mast/finbox. Not on top. In your pic the deck shell cannot be glued right in place and there will be a big gap between deck and fin/mast box!!!

Second:
As Eric already mentioned: Sail trim requires some adjustments.
For beginning it is not bad to have the mainsail rather open compared to the flat jib because the boat will sail very userfriendly with it - but slowly.....
To get more power you should give more tension on the leech of the main sail by more tension on the kicking strap below the main boom. Also I would suggest to attach the ends of the sails closer to the booms to get a better control for sail shape/profile.

The mast bend, which is important for sail shape of jib and main sail is trimmed by the backstay and the jib and the small plastic piece at deck, the mast plate I call it. When rigging the boat and the mast is without any tension you will see that he will bend forward when tighten the jib - and the main sail gets a deep profile. Not good. In opposite when only tighten the backstay the jib gets tension and become flat and the main sail also become flat and if the mast is too much bend by the backstay the main sail also gets some diagonal wrinkles from the luff right down to the end of the main boom attachment. Not good.
Now, in this position try to move the mast plate at deck a little aft. You will see how the mastbend will become less in the bottom part of the mast. Move it foreward will increase the bend forward.
Now you have to trimm the mast through playing with these three adjustments that the mast becomes only a very slight bend aft, making the main sail profile smooth without diagonal wrinkles and giving as well the jib enough tension that the jib leech will not open too much in the wind. Thats all.....

I start to put the mast straight in about 90° to the deck. Then I tension the jib just as much that there is a little tension on it. Now I tension the backstay to trimm the mastbend to the main sail. I look at the top of the mast and when the sail starts to become diagonal wrinkles I stopp tighten the backstay and move the mast plate a bit aft. After some minor adjustments for some more fine tuning the rigg should be ok for sailing.

Perhaps you may download this document for sail trimm on MM, even all the text is just german but the pics may told you a bit?
Segeltrimm MM

By the way: Perhaps you also should download some MM-videos from Steven Oosterheert of Netherland.
He offers them on his website www.micromagic.nl see for photos/videos.
There you can see MMs in action and often with good sail trim.

I will also give you the direct link to his video of our first national championship.
Video GMMC 2004 Version 2 from Steven.
Unfortuneatly its about 20 MB big, but worth to look at. Look for sail trimm of the boats NED 88 (thats Steven), GER 58, GER 36, HIGHNOON and perhaps also GER 15 (thats me.... Rolleyes ) only to name a few which can be viewed with good trimm. (otherwise just look at the boats sailing in front...  Tongue ) Look also for NED 17 with very open main trim and tight jib what is ok for fresh winds.

If you are sailing at Central Park some more times you also may ask for Jon Elmaleh. He is a well known Marblehead skipper/designer and also the designer of the RC-Lasers and as far as I know he is still living in New York. Perhaps you can ask him for some advise in trimming your MM. You may sent him kindest regards from me - we met at formal european Marblehead championsships in 1987 (Netherland), 1988 (Berlin) and 1989 (Italy). Perhaps he remembers?

Good luck!

Thomas

...some other point I forgot: Rolleyes

You also should add battens to your sails on the other side of the original batten/reinforcements.
Can be made out from ABS-plastic sheet material, about 0.5 mm thick, 5 mm width and as long as the original reinforcements. Glued with thin double side glueing films (you may find such film for fixing photos on papers or a thicker one for fixing carpeting on the floor)
These additional battens will make the sail profile/shape better and as far as I can see on your pics are strongly necessary!

Regards
Thomas
